Well not really, but we are sponsoring local St Albans resident, Ed Suttie to make the 21 day journey in April!
Ed is a member of the Prospect union and works at a sustainable construction company in Watford. In April he will realise his dream to make it to the North Pole after a 230km trek over sea ice, snow and pressure ridges, led by an experienced polar guide over a three week period.
Whilst funding the trip himself he is aiming to raise £30,000 for the charities closest to his heart. The money raised will be split between Cancer Research UK, the Antarctic Heritage Trust (since Ed has been to the South Pole in his role as a glaciologist in the 90’s), and two fantastic St Albans charities, Rennie Grove Hospice Care, and Earthworks who help people with learning difficulties and mental health problems through organic horticultural training on their site.
On deciding to do the trek and choosing the charities to support, Ed said: “This brings together my love of science and its value to society, my understanding that community is key in life and my interest in history.”
Ed is currently in training and has organised a number of fantastic fundraisers including a Polar Bear Plunge on New Years Day, and a gala dinner and auction to take place in February. If you would like to support Ed you can do so by following him on Twitter @Ed2NorthPole or via his Virgin Money Giving page.
We will be supporting Ed in the run up to the big trek and wish him the best of luck.Find out more about Ed at www.ed2northpole.org
