A bit about UNISON
UNISON is one of the UK’s largest trade unions, serving more than 1.3 million members. The union represents full-time and part-time staff providing public services. UNISON represents and acts for members working in a range of public services and utilities, representing members, negotiating and bargaining on their behalf, campaigning for better working conditions and pay and for public services.

Active! is the membership magazine circulated to the 11,500 activist members of Unison’s Yorkshire and Humberside region. These members are union representatives in the workplace who support other members with work issues, recruit new members and strive to educate others about what the union stands for and what the union is doing to help them.

Active! is a news-driven publication covering hot topics affecting the union, UK industry and issues close to the heart of activists in the Yorkshire and Humberside area. It includes regular columns from leading journalists and political figureheads, and features stories to inspire, educate, and inform active members on life within the union and life as an activist.

The brief for Active! magazine
We were delighted to be asked by UNISON to help them launch a new quarterly magazine for their activist members in the Yorkshire and Humberside region. They wanted a magazine supported by affinity advertising that could really communicate to this important group of members, involve them in union discussions, contribute towards shaping union policy but most importantly be an inspiration to, and celebration of the vital role activists play in the continued evolution of the union.

Our strategy and solutions
Century One relished the challenge and teamed up with Barrie Clement. Barrie started the role with a breadth of experience from The Independent, where he was the Labour and Transport Editor. Prior to this he was the Labour Reporter at The Times and Chief City Sub editor at the Sunday Telegraph. He arrived ready to write and source superb content. Editorial is king, after all.

Barrie manages the editorial process and regularly commissions columns from contributors such as Paul Routledge of The Daily Mirror, Peter Lazenby of the Morning Star, and Kevin Maguire, TV political pundit and Associate Editor of the Daily Mirror. A wide variety of politians and respected journalists also provide engaging editorial contributions. The clean and smart design support the UNISON branding and gives readers a clear, concise and respected vehicle for the authoritative editorial, supported by stunning photography and sharp imagery sourced by Century One. We also work with UNISON’s affinity partners, like UIA, to plan their advertising strategy in the magazine, effectively targeting readers with influence and passion for the Union.

What do UNISON think?

“I’ve found Century One Publishing to be a really professional organisation who are well organised, friendly and always produce the magazine on time. The design team works tirelessly to ensure that illustrations and page designs look top-notch and really speak to UNISON members. They are also a very nice bunch of people to work alongside.”

Readers were not unhappy with the magazine before, but as one wrote recently: “What’s happened to Geoscientist? Suddenly it’s terrific!”Dr Ted Nield NUJ FGS, Editor, Geoscientist
